About Becky
Hi! My name is Becky Davis, and I am the owner of "The Quiltpox". I am a 40-something-year-old mother of four boys. I have been married to the same wonderful man for 24 years. We returned to the U.S. in June of 2006 from Suriname, South America. We are missionaries with the Wesleyan Church. My husband, Phil, taught pastors in our Bible school and translated lots of theological "stuff" into Dutch, the official language of Suriname. I taught piano to some of our local church young people, and I also taught classroom music to 1st - 12th graders at the international school where our boys attended. Our last year in Suriname I was also privileged to be teaching Home Economics to a great group of 7th-12th graders. I even managed to sneak some quilting in! After a year in the United States, we changed direction and moved to Belgium. My husband is working on a doctorate in theology, with an emphasis on postmodernism. His goal is to effectively train and support our missionaries and pastors across Europe in a way that will help them to be more effective in their culture. While we are here, I am homeschooling our younger three boys, and quilting as much as possible! Music was always the focus of my life. I have also been sewing since I was very young, and I have dabbled in other crafts off and on. About four years ago, I accidentally started quilting. I had finally finished a cross stitch project that had taken 10 years (!) and I was looking for a good way to frame it. I was in the U.S. at the time, but knew I would be returning to Suriname, so I thought a fabric frame would be a good idea - lightweight and easy to transport. Without knowing anything about quilting, I went out and bought fabric, batting, quilting thread and a cable motif template. I sewed the fabric to the cross stitch picture, added the batting and backing, and began to hand quilt. It looked awful. I couldn't do that to the project I had worked on for so long, so I took it all off and had the cross stitch picture professionally framed. Glass, wood, and everything. Somehow, in spite of that failure, I was still interested in quilting. I went to the library and checked out some books, and I bought some magazines. My first project was a paper-pieced Christmas wallhanging, and it turned out great! (Following a pattern with directions made all the difference!) I made another wallhanging scaled down from a larger pattern in a magazine, and then I took a class, just to be sure I wasn't doing anything really wrong. The rest, as they say, is history. My kids say I'm obsessed. They just rolled their eyes when we were in a restaurant and I was sketching the wallpaper border because I thought it would make a really nice pattern for a quilt border! If you are interested in seeing some of the quilts I have made, you can visit my Webshots page. I hope you enjoy my website. Please feel free to sign my guestbook if you would like to make any comments. (Use the "Guestbook" link below. BeckyBTW, I have since successfully framed a cross stitch project with quilted fabric. There is a photo on my Webshots page in the "Odds and Ends" album. Information about our mission organization, Global Partners, can be found on their website, http://www.praygivego.com.
